1st day of chemo

This morning we began our long journey downtown at 6:30am.  Ellie was handling waking up early and getting on the road really well.  She ate a really good breakfast.  When we got to children’s memorial we got greeted in the waiting room by many familiar faces of the Oncology department including her doctor the very best doctor ever Dr. Goldman.  I have never met a doctor with such a great disposition.  Not only does he have a great disposition but we found out today he was 1 of 50 oncologists in the world to be chosen to attend a very important conference.  That’s says so much for what kind of doctor he is. 

We got taken in first for Ellie’s vitals, Height, Weight, etc. She did pretty well with that.  Then we got taken into another room to access her port.  This is where it all went south.  She was not a happy camper.  They then tape it up and Ellie is ready to go to the inpatient oncology hospital part.  They told us that some kids just need 15 min or so chemo treatments and they take their chemo in the office but since Ellie was three hours she would have to go in the hospital side.  Ellie was walling her body like crazy and screaming on the top of her lungs that her port itched.  I had to hold her down so she wouldn’t hurt herself.   She had a horrible rash that was spreading through her chest so they gave her Benadryl.  Within a half hour she finally fell asleep and slept through almost the whole three hours.  We finally left the hospital at 2:30pm.

Ellie had a nice surprise when she arrived home.  Thanks to Girl Scout troop 319 she got a build a bear, books, game for her DS, and homemade cards (her favorite) Thank you for brightening her day.  

And as of right now knock on wood, Ellie has yet to throw up.  What I did find very interesting is that I learned that if Ellie does vomit over the next day or so we need to be very careful cleaning it up.  It is toxic due to the chemo.  The medications say on the warning that it could burn the skin of the person cleaning it up.  It’s so sad that I feel like I’m poisoning my own child.  But this is the only way she has the chance to survive. 

The social worker came in and spoke with us also today to inform us that Ellie qualifies for make a wish.  Not sure what her wish will be.  We just have to let the social worker know when we are ready.  She also said that if it comes down to she only has so much more time left they will speed up her wish.  I just hope that this is just a bump in the road in my beautiful little girl.  I have a wish for my little girl. I wish that someday her daddy will walk her down the aisle and I can watch her have her first dance with her daddy to “I hope you dance”  Love and peace to my sweet baby girl as she sleeps tight in her bed tonight.
