never drama free

So this week is not without drama.  On Wednesday we went down town to have a checkup and receive Chemo.  Once again another very exciting day for Ellie and her guest of honor for the week my nephew Karson.  They were able to meet some Chicago Cubs Players.  Unfortunately I could not tell you which ones they were but they were very sweet kids.   Yes kids, one of them were only 24 years old and still attending school.  I guess you hear about the kids that are drafted early in life but actually meeting one really puts it into perspective.  Anyhow moving on to the really topic at hand.

Ellie’s counts were on target so Chemo for the day was on schedule.  It turned out to be a great day.   Unfortunately I cannot say the same for Thursday.  Ellie attended school and all was well.  She even went to Taekwondo and took class.  Half way through class she had to sit down from being too tired.  Then when she came home around 8:00pm she seemed lethargic.  I Checked her tempature and it was what I suspected she had a high fever. 

We had to head down to Down Town Children’s ER.  This night was like a roller coaster.  One moment the ER doctor was telling us they would just give her some antibiotics and send us home.  The next moment she was freaking out about Ellie’s vitals and telling us we were going to be admitted.  She had to go back and forth about 10 times between the hours of 9 and 3am.  Finally she made a decision to keep us overnight in order to monitor Ellie.  And I must say thank god she made the decision.  By the time we got into a room they were able to test Ellie for a few different viruses.  Around 3:30am it was finally time to get some sleep.  So I thought.  Ellie’s heart rate kept spiking, her vitals were very scary all night long.  I spent the whole night staring at the monitor scared to death.  6:30am something didn’t look right so I put my head on Ellie’s forehead.  She had spiked a fever again.  It ended up being a sleepless night. 

A few hours later we were visited by the Oncologist on call.  Might I add he came in dressed in gowns, masks, and gloves the whole nine yards. Come to find out Ellie has Rhino Virus and she was being quarantined.  Oncologist expressed how he was very happy that I came into the hospital.  He also expressed that for a normal kid with Rhinovirus would not be such a big deal but a child with Cancer and going through Chemo it was extremely dangerous.  Her vitals were still off the charts.  So it looked like another night in the hospital

Friday night Ellie’s fever finally broke and her vitals finally started to head back to normal.  When Ellie woke up on Saturday she asked me what day it was.  I told her Saturday, it then clicked that she missed the movie reward at school and fun run I was hoping she forgot.  She was really disappointed.  Unfortunately Ellie has had tons of disappointments in the past year and half but at the same time she has had several great experiences too.  We were finally released around 5:30pm on Saturday.  Ellie was thrilled to be breaking out of the hospital.  I posted some pictures of Ellie with the Cub players, Ellie in the ER/Hospital and then some pictures of her after being released.   Oh yeah and Dave's Birthday Gift.  It was his birthday on Saturday so Ellie and I wrapped his gift in the hospital for him.  What you can do with some construction paper, glue stick and hospital gloves.
